Negative influence does help I'm not saying it doesn't, but just remember when you were younger and maybe a bully was hitting you b/c you were walking on his side of the street...the next time around you go on the other side, but he's there...so you avoid it...you see what I'm saying??? They do help but if used too much people will ignore it

Actually I was kinda the bully when I was younger. Yeah, I know about the downside and upside of negative and positive influence. You shouldn't do too much of the other. You should just keep it aroud normal. ex. too much positve influence will make that person/group/thing to keep expecting to get what you gave them for a job well done and will only do more if you continue.

You need both. You need to reward them when they do stuff well, but you need to make sure they understand their mistakes when they make them. The way you go about that should be determined to a large extent by the situation. You can't just always give them pushups when they screw up, there need to be alternatives. And you guys really need to remember that second place is good and they do NOT need to be taught that second place is bad and that only first is acceptable. If it is a situation where they did not perform to their best then rag on them about that, but don't teach them that second place is bad, because that is how you send morale down the hole and without a good morale level you can't win so it's a big catch-22 and it's much better just to avoid it.

I see. Next when I have questions or advice I should just ask you. What you say makes alot of sense. Ever considering giving advice?

I give advice when people ask for it, but i try not too when they don't because I want them to figure it out for themselves as much as they can because then they learn it better. But I'll answer most anything you ask me to the best of my ability.

Look guys, seeing as we're coming up to that anniversary, I figured it was about time to update this a little. One of the best things LCDR White ever taught me was that life really isn't fair. We've all been told that a million times, but it was the way he explained it. I had been working on this project for about two years--working really hard and getting really excited about it. I had come a long way and had actually put a really good project together, but when the time came around to put my project into the major competition, I only gotten sixth out of eighteen, after getting worst in the first one and first in the second one. I hadn't really expected to get first, but placing would have been nice. He sure expected me to. Then, to top it off, there was this other kid who entered a similar competition who let his group do his whole project for him, and then when they got first place, he got the glory because he was the group leader and I was mad mostly because I hated the kid. That story makes more sense if you know what it's about and a lot of you do, but for the rest of you the point is that I worked really hard and lost and he didn't even bother to try and won and I had thus decided that there was no point in trying and LCDR White just looked at me and said, "How did you feel after the Area competition your freshman year?" Because the truth is I felt crappy. We ahd won first place, but we had never marched together as a team, I had screwed up, as had two other people, and we were out of step fro a good quarter of the routine. But we had won and most of the team was happy, and there was I sitting there upset because I didn't feel like we worked hard enough and I figured that if we could win without trying that year then we wouldn't try the next year and we would still expect to win and then when we didn't, everyone would think drill was stupid and quit. Which is kind of what happened. But after my freshman year he just told me that if we "did that well without trying, how well do you think you could do when you do try?" When I tried, I lost. That wasn't fair. But in the end, I felt like I got exactly what I deserved and sixth wasn't bad, and I wasn't losing any sleep over it. The other kid just about had a cardiac the next year trying to keep his title and actually had to try. I let myself relax and try my hardest and be content with what I got and the next year I got first place. So just remember that no matter what happens, as long as you do your best, it turns out best for you in the long run, even if you don't see it immediately.

Now for a funnier story. He always told me to consider the source and not believe everything I hear. One day a couple summers ago, we were standing in the second floor office talking to one of the secretaries about a certain math teacher who was on vacation in Colorado. He made a joke about how she had been gone so long she had probably married a guy and started up a dude ranch in Texas or something (doesn't that sound like the sequel to "She thinks my tractor's sexy"?). Within a week teachers were talking about her and her new adventures. "Is she coming back in the fall?" "Do you think he's hot?" "Maybe I should move to Texas?" "Is she going to stay a math teacher out there or is she a farmer now?" "I wonder if they have horses." After three weeks of this, I had forgotten all about that day in the office and I started asking myself if this rumor was actually true and one day about a month after this all started, I went up to LCDR White and asked him if she really had started a dude ranch and who was going to be the new math teacher come fall. He just started laughing and told me it had worked perfectly. I just looked at him dumbfounded while he retold me the whole story and I slowly but surely pieced it together. All because I really wasn't listening the first time I heard the story. So yeah kids, always listen to the most reliable source, typically one of the earlier ones, and think about things before you repeat them to other people. That's definitely enough wisdom for now.
