here are some of the things that i learned from commander white. I'm doing this for some of you cadets out there that never had the pleasure of being taught by him or cadets that never even met him. anybody that has known or been taught by commander can post. if you want to know more feel free to post the details here or private message me, or one of the other moderators.
commander's wisdom words for the week:
if you want to be a good leader then you must treat people as you would want them to treat you. common sense, right? wrong!!!! lots of people know this little quote but they don't live by it. the navy is all about honor, courage, and commitment. if you are leading someone and you ask them to do a task then you better make sure that you would do it yourself.

What I've learned from him is that I need to be active, no more shy person that hides in the corner watching their life pass by. And if I want the job or whatever, I need to act like I have that job...to always ask questions...and to never lose confidence in yourself...and I hate to admit it but I did that just recently, oh well I guess push up's for me right

All right, Nick, good looking out. Here's more wisdom straight from his mouth:
"Praise in public, criticize in private." lol I think we all heard that about 900 times last year.
"Even if the other schools cheat, we don't talk about it." And they apparently don't anymore.
Um, I guess there was a lot that we learned in his class. We learned that some kids are too stupid to copy answers out of a book and that Alee has no legs and Midget tried to blow up a boomer and that apparently it's none of our business what LCDR White did in his spare time until he passed out naked on a street corner. (That was a story of which the moral was that being an officer is a 24/7 job lol.)
We learned that Nick and Mary love each other and that John's beautiful and that Barbara thinks ENS Keith in Caine Mutiny is hot. We learned that boys like to watch Bridge Over the River Kwai, but only the last 7 minutes when they blow it up. We also learned that Princess Bride is quite possibly the greatest movie ever made. Great stuff! I could talk about what I learned from him for like years.

wisdom words of the week:
well its another week already and you need some wisdom to help you on your way, here it is. "punish the individual not the group". if you punish the group for one person's mistakes then that only splits up your team. rotc is not just a team, its a family. so punish ONLY one person, good leaders know this but better leaders pratice this. be one of the better leaders!!

that's quite true, though even commander acknowledged that group punishment had its own way of motivating people. we got to that point toward the end of the year. didn't your platoon, nick? lol. In general, you really don't want to punish the group for one person's mistakes because the fault does typically lie just with the one individual. There may come a time, though, when the individual is bringing down the group and the group needs to step in and help the individual. That is when group punishment becomes very practical. It is good for getting groups of people to think as a team too.

Ah... if only he were here. There are so many times I just think about A LOT of stuff and wish he were here so I could discuss these things. The thing I remember most about commander was his lovely saying, "If you're early you're on time, if you're on time you're late."

I wished I could have spent a lot more time with commander. I only got to know him during my NS1 year before he passed away. But during that time he was someone I could look up to. He wasn't too serious or too easy going, he was the perfect leader. I still remember one of his advice about first impressions. If you are in charge of something you shouldn't appear easy going or those under you wouldn't respect your power. They would slack off and the job wouldn't get done. That is why I am usualy serious most of the time. ;D That and another advice he gave me was to cut my hair. The NS1s this year aren't lucky enough to be taught by Commander White so it's up to us to pass on his teachings to them.

...that and another advice he gave me was to cut my hair. ... HAHAHAHA... lol, weren't we all given that advice our NS1 year. Ah yes, I think some NS3's are still reminded to this day to cut their hair... it's the rules! lol ;D BUT, I get where you are coming from. You must have had REALLY LONG HAIR in order to have LCDR bring that to your attention, huh?

Yeah my hair was really long(LOL). It was about three and a half inches long before I cut it. In last year's yearbook I still had my long hair but it was only about two and a half inches long. So Nick you're saying I should drill those NS1s into lean mean ROTC machines?

I see thanks for the tip. I'll drill them harder than Peter for I have high expectations for most of them. But hey I'll get to know them so they will have trust in me as a leader and friend(If I want to).

BUt remember if you are too strict they will be scared of you...you do need to show them a playful side...there is a time to be playful and a time to be serious...my team knows that, hopefully...man I just miss the advice he gave us..."never give up"

Hey they being afraid of me.....that sounds kinda fun. Time to open a new chapter in their little lives that they will only know suffering hahahahaha ;D. J/K I know . Being too strict I would be like a dictator and cause more problems than solve them. But a little negative influence helps out sometimes. It helps hold the unit/team/plt together.
